A pair of Japanese cabinet vases
- The Shimazu clan crest (upper part): The circle enclosing a cross corresponds to the coat of arms of the Shimazu princely family, which historically ruled the Satsuma province. This symbol certifies the authenticity of the piece's geographical or stylistic origin.
- The craftsman's signature (lower part):
The Japanese character W (Yama / Zan), meaning "Mountain," can be distinguished. In Satsuma art, this kanji very often appears as a suffix in the names of renowned workshops or artists (for example: Kinkozan,
Shozan, Gyokuzan, Shuzan, Hozan, or Ryozan). Here, the ideogram above the "Ш" is partially stylized, but the overall style is characteristic of productions from the late Meiji period (1868-1912).
