Agatal fossil coral geode, Tampa bay, Montastraea annularis.
The collection site is Sixmile Creek in Tampa. This site no longer exists. It was destroyed and reshaped to form the Tampa bypass channel.
This fossil coral dates from the Miocene (25 to 32 million years) and formed when fine sediments have covered shallow coral reefs. When the groundwater rich in silica crossed the rock which has formed (and exposed when sea level has dropped), they replaced the coral calcium carbonate skeleton with calcédonia which has crystallized in habitus botryoidal
