The medallion symbolizes the glorification of royal victories: During the reign of the Sun King, art was a major political tool. The depiction of sieges of fortified cities, cavalry charges, and armies crossing rivers (such as the famous Crossing of the Rhine in 1672) directly served to celebrate France's military power against the Triple Alliance.
Triumphal ornamentation: The plump putti holding trophies of arms (cannons, flags, antique armor) form a decorative vocabulary typical of French classicism of that period. Very similar compositions can be found on the bronze bas-reliefs of the Place des Victoires in Paris or in the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles.
