This plaque is a typical example of Great War folk art made from recycled materials: the brass from shell casings or armor plates to create art objects

The design combines the fluidity of the late Art Nouveau lines (especially in the curves of the hat and dress) and the nascent geometrization of Art Deco. The duty of remembrance: Engraving the mention of the Yser three years after the events shows how much this stopping battle (where the Yser was deliberately flooded to stop the Germans) remained a symbol of heroic resistance in the collective mind in 1917.

it is an allegory of war and reconstruction

Although the scene seems intimate, its creation in August 1917 and the mention of the Battle of the Yser (1914) give it a strong symbolic dimension:

  • The woman in the hat: Her leaning and protective posture evokes the figure of the homeland, or an attentive mother facing distress. Her civilian clothes recall the fate of displaced populations and the courage of women behind the front.
  • The crouching child: Depicted naked, he symbolizes innocence, vulnerability, but also rebirth and the future of the nation to be rebuilt after destruction.
  • The mound: The child seems to be scraping or manipulating a pile of earth or debris, which can evoke working the land, searching for sustenance or rebuilding on the ruins of the conflict.
